Wright and Standhardinger star in Gilas win over Chinese-Taipei A

Gilas Pilipinas 88 – Chinese Taipei A 72

After a horrible start to the tournament, Gilas Pilipinas bounced back with a big win over the home team, Chinese-Taipei A. Unlike in their first game, Gilas got off to a hot start and jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Ravena set the tone in the very first play with a strong drive to the basket finishing over Quincy Davis.

The Chinese-Taipei team got back into the game with their outside shooting midway through the quarter. Matthew Wright continued to heat up in the tournament. He buried back-to-back three-pointers near the end of the opening period to put Gilas back in the driver’s seat.

The second period was a game of runs. Christian Standhardinger’s enegry combined with Wright’s outside shooting gave Gilas another great start to the quarter and propelled them to a 30-22 lead. Chinese Taipei used the long ball to tie the game at 40 but timely baskets by Gilas near the end of the half gave them a seven-point lead heading into the break.

Gilas continued to battle the Chinese-Taipei outside shooting with grit and intelligent playmaking. Standhardinger was a beast in the middle he was playing physical basketball and players inside with his tough, imposing game. Ravena played well as the lead guard setting the table for the rest of his team. A corner three-pointer by RR Pogoy gave Gilas their first double-digit lead of the game.

The dam broke in the fourth quarter and Gilas was able to pull away. Jio Jalalon and Mike Tolomia were able to use their shifty drives to get into the lane, attract the defense and dump off to Standhardinger for easy baskets. Kiefer Ravena hit a big triple with a little over three minutes left in the game to seal the deal.

Wright and Standhardinger led the team in scoring with 17 points apiece. Wright hit four treys to get his points while Standhardinger patrolled the paint with 15 rebounds. Ravena added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Gilas will have another game against the home team, Chinese-Taipei B on July 17.
