A few days ago, third pick Luka Doncic showed why he was worthy of all the hype. Many questioned why the Phoenix Suns passed up on picking the Slovenian superstar with the first pick. They buzz grew even louder when the Suns entered training camp without a starting caliber point guard on the roster.
The player the Suns picked, DeAndre Ayton went through the summer relatively unnoticed. In his first official NBA game, he came out with a bang to answer the questions on why the Suns picked him first.
Ayton controlled the paint in 30 minutes of action. He finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the Suns’ 102-106 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
Doncic was traded to the Dallas Mavericks by the Atlanta Hawks. The player they got in return, Trae Young didn’t quite have the same explosive debut as Doncic. But the Hawks still got the Preseason win over the New Orleans Pelicans, 116-102. DeAndre Bembry led the way with 20 points while John Collins had 18.
Another rookie, Kevin Knox made his introduction to the league. The ninth pick of the draft led the New York Knicks with 13 points and 10 rebounds in their OT win. The Knicks edged out the Washington Wizards, 124-121.
Joel Embiid continued his battle with big men on and off the court. Last season, Embiid tussled with the likes of Hassan Whiteside and Andre Drummond. This early into the new season, he found a new rival in Mo Bamba. The rookie had 12 points, three rebounds and got Embiid on a poster. Embiid got the last laugh. The Sixers won over the Magic, 120-114. Embiid finished with 21 points and seven rebounds.
