Adamson head coach Franz Pumaren has onions.
You see, with five seconds to go, the former DLSU mentor subbed in team captain Dawn Ochea, with Ateneo up by a point, 61-60. With the defense locked in on guards like Robbie Manalang and Jerrick Ahanmisi, Ochea was able to flash near the baseline, catch the inbounds, and sink what turned out to be the game-winning jumper, giving the Falcons a 62-61 victory.
But what made the decision pretty damn balls-y is the fact that Ochea prior to that shot, was last on the court at the 7:24 mark of the third period, right before he got sent back to the Adamson bench with four fouls.
Heck that was Ochea’s only made field goal of the game. He had taken just one prior attempt, a triple, that missed.
That’s a move that could have easily blown up in his face (“Why’d you go with someone ice cold off the bench?” “Why didn’t you go to the best shooter right now in the UAAP, Jerrick Ahanmisi?” “Why didn’t you ride Robbie Manalang’s hot hand?”). But it didn’t, and now Adamson is up 2-1 in the UAAP standings.
