UST catches fire to eliminate FEU

The UST Growling Tigers are off to a blistering start in the Season 82 playoffs. They move forward in the stepladder after taking down the FEU Tamaraws 81-71. The Growling Tigers face the UP Fighting Maroons next.

Chabi Chabi Yo continues to be the backbone of the UST attack. He finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. His guards backed him up with outside bombs. Brent Paraiso dropped five triples en route to 18 points while Renzo Subido nailed four threes to make up the bulk of his 14 points. Ken Tuffin scored 20 to lead FEU.

UST was on fire to start the game. They scored 26 points in the opening period and nailed six of their 12 three-point attempts. Paraiso led the charge with two corner threes including one coming off a four-point play. UST’s shooting propelled them ahead by double-digits. Their offense continued to run smoothly in the second period. Though their outside shot wasn’t falling as much, the Growling Tigers shot a white-hot 87% from the two-point range. They built a lead as high as 26 points heading into the half.

The Tamaraws fought hard to get back in the game. Behind the combined efforts of Tuffin and Hubert Cani, FEU was able to cut the deficit down to just 11 points heading to the final period. The two veterans combined for 19 points in the third period alone.

FEU continued to threaten to get back in the game in the fourth quarter. They got as close as five points midway through the period. But that was the closest they’d get. Subido came up clutch, scoring on a bucket to stop UST’s bleeding. He then scored on a step-back three-pointer in the final minutes of the game to increase UST’s lead to 13 points. That was the nail in the coffin that practically ended FEU’s season.
