It took less than three weeks after Yeng Guiao stepped down for Gilas Pilipinas to find their next head coach. Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio announced to the media today that the new Gilas Pilipinas head coach will be Tim Cone.
It’s official. SBP President Al Panlilio (@APan9) announces that Tim Cone (@manilacone) will be the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas Men in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games. Full story coming up on @Sports5PH— Carlo Pamintuan (@carlo_pamintuan) September 23, 2019
Cone’s name has been floated as a possible candidate to coach the Men’s National Team. With this announcement today, Cone is set to return to National Team Coaching duties 11 years after he last handled the Philippine Team. Cone was the head coach of the Philippine Centennial Team back in 1998. That team finished first in the Jones Cup and third in the Asian Games of that year.
Cone will be taking over the team as they prepare for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games happening on November this year. According to the report by ESPN 5, Cone will only be taking on the coaching duties for the SEA Games so far. No finalization has been made as to who the next permanent head coach of Gilas will be.
“We also want to reiterate that we’re taking it one step at a time and this arrangement is for the SEA Games only, for now. We’re still putting together a plan on how to move forward with our preparations for 2023 and beyond.”Al Panlilio, SBP President
