The Week in Basketball (September 10-16, 2012)

While we’re on Will Ferell movies mode…

(Cue Jackie Moon’s voice — just for this line) “This was your crazy week in basketball”:

5. NCAA – Outrageous performances by Calvin Abueva and Kevin Alas lead off to Baste-Letran match-up

Calvin Abueva exploded for a Rondo-like trip-dub as San Sebastian grounded the Mapua Cardinals last Monday (September 10). The much talked about Alaska Aces rookie posted 21 points, 20 boards, and 10 dimes along with two steals and three blocks — talk about filling the stat sheet.

In the second game of that NCAA Monday, Kevin Alas was on “Akala mo ikaw lang” mode as his Knights drubbed the St. Benilde Blazers. He notched a career-high 35 points on 5 out of 11 shooting from Rainbow Land (not a fictitious place contrary to what Cam Brady was articulating in The Campaign), to go along with 5 boards, 5 dimes, 2 steals and a block.

The top this-top that game that Alas and Abueva were seemingly on last Monday provided a fantastic backdrop for their head-on collision last Saturday (September 15). Although Calvin Abueva had better numbers (27-18-3), Kevin Alas’ (23-7-4) Knights came out on top, 82-67, to move to solo fourth place with a 9-6 record.

That big win by Letran not only boosted their Final Four chances but also moved Baste (11-4) two losses back of the league-leading San Beda Red Lions (12-2).
