REPORT: The Spurs trade Leonard to the Raptors for DeRozan

For months, the problems between Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs has been brewing. Last month, Leonard finally asked for a trade after he deemed his relationship with the team to be irreparable.

Many assumed that Leonard would be headed to his team of choice, the LA Lakers or one of the East contenders, the Boston Celtics or Philadelphia 76ers.

Instead a team from the North swooped in and nabbed the All-Star. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news that Leonard has been traded “in principle” to the Toronto Raptors.

Leonard will be sent to the Raptors along with Danny Green. The Spurs will receive an All-Star back in return for Leonard. The Raptors are sending DeMar DeRozan to the Spurs with young big man Jakob Poeltl and a protected 2019 first round pick.

Leonard only played in nine games last season before he was shut down for good because of a hamstring injury. The treatment and handling of that injury was what caused the rift between the Spurs and their superstar. Green was a the starting shooting guard for the Spurs for most of last season. He averaged 8.6 points on 41% from three-point land.

DeRozan had one of the best seasons of his career. He averaged 23 points, a little more than five assists and four rebounds in 80 games. He was named to the All-Star Game as he led the Raptors to a franchise record 59 games. Poeltl played a key role for the Raptors off the bench last season. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 82 games.
