#SEAGames2019: Gilas 3×3 Men and Women sweep first day games

As the first basketball games of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, the Gilas 3×3 teams didn’t hesitate to show everyone what Philippine Basketball is all about. The Men’s and Women’s teams came away with twin sweeps in Day 1, winning all seven of their combined assignments for the day.

The Men’s team, composed of CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa, Jason Perkins and Chris Newsome dominated the field to finish the day with a 4-0 record. They have two more group games but are already assured of a spot in the Semifinals of the tournament.

Team Indonesia game Gilas some trouble in the first game. They managed to win by only four points, needing a clutch basket from Perez to get the 21-17 win. But after that, it was a breeze for the Men’s team, winning by large margins in their succeeding three games. They beat Myanmar by 11, 21-10 then took down Vietnam, 21-15. They closed out the day with a 21-10 win over Thailand.

The Women’s Team with Jack Animam, Clare Castro, Janine Pontejos and Afril Bernardino also closed out the day undefeated. They won all three of their assignments and are a win away from booking a slot in the Semis.

Gilas opened the day with a big win over Myanmar. Their height advantage allowed them to run away with a 21-4 decision. The women then played big against tougher competition to get their next two wins. They survived a rally from Malaysia to win 15-13 and they were able to get a 16-13 win over Indonesia. In both games, Bernardino, Pontejos and Animan hit big baskets to help Gilas get the result.
