Sangalang plays big in front of hometown crowd to give Magnolia’s first win

Magnolia Hotshots 92 – GlobalPort Batang Pier 87

Ian Sangalang, playing in front of a Cabalen crowd scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Magnolia Hotshots to their first win of the conference. They downed the GlobalPort Batang Pier with a late run in the final period.

The Batang Pier and Hotshots fought tooth and nail in the PBA road game in Pampanga. GlobalPort was looking to extend their winning streak to three games while Magnolia needed to bounce back from a tough loss in their first game. Ian Sangalang came off the bench to boost Magnolia in the first quarter as the Hotshots took a slim lead. Stanley Pringle led his team back in the second quarter to tie the count as they headed into the halftime break.

The game was a back and forth affair between both teams. GlobalPort took a two-point lead with less than four minutes left in the game after Sean Anthony buried two free throws. That was when Magnolia made their move to take over the game. Sangalang answered right back with a hook shot to tie the score. The Hotshots went to their young forward again as he was fouled inside. Sangalang buried one free throw to retake the lead once again. Paul Lee scored on a floater in the lane to extend Magnolia’s lead and Sangalang followed that up with a strong drive to the hoop to give the Hotshots a five-point lead.

Magnolia went on a 7-0 run to control the game heading into the final minutes. Sangalang scored five points in that key run to led the Hotshots. Vernon Macklin and Jio Jalalon scored on clutch free throws to secure the win.
