The San Miguel Beermen have bucked the odds. From finishing the Eliminations at seventh, they made it all the way back to the Commissioner’s Cup Finals after dispatching the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The Beermen outlast the Elasto Painters 98-95 to win the series in four games.
After a wasted 51-point explosion in their last game, Chris McCullough made sure to bring the goods in the clutch and finish off the Elasto Painters in Game 4. He came up big once again with 35 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks in the win. McCullough had held from Alex Cabagnot who scored 21 points on 60% shooting and June Mar Fajardo who had 19 points and seven boards. Carl Montgomerey had 18 points and 17 rebounds for Rain or Shine.
As usual, the game was tight between both teams as they exchanged runs early in the game. San Miguel jumped out to an early lead but their offense sputtered in the second quarter. They were only able to score nine points during that stretch and Rain or Shine took control of the game. The Beermen were playing catch-up for most of the second half.
McCullough took control late in the game. He nailed big baskets in the fourth quarter to prevent Rain or Shine from building a big lead. With less than three minutes left in the game, he scored on a 5-0 spurt to steal the lead away from Rain or Shine, 96-94.
In the last two minutes of the game, Gabe Norwood got a steal that led to a fast break opportunity for Montgomery. Unfortunately for the Elasto Painters, McCullough was there to contest the shot. He rose up high and swatted Montgomery attempt away.
In the following possession, Terrence Romeo asked for the ball at the top of the key and took on Montgomery by himself. He danced around with the ball before rising up for a side-step jumper. The ball swished through and that was the dagger for the game. San Miguel was able to hold off Rain or Shine until the final buzzer.
