San Miguel Beermen 109 – NLEX Road Warriors 98
Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo powered the San Miguel Beermen over the NLEX Road Warriors in a hotly contested match-up.
The Beermen had a hot start to the game. Starters Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot and Fajardo led the team to the driver’s seat after the first period. NLEX came roaring back in the second period. JR Quinahan found his range and scored eight of his 12 points in the second period. Quinahan’s jumper capped an 11-5 run midway through the quarter to give the Road Warriors the lead. He hit another jumper near the end of the quarter to give NLEX an eight-point lead as they overtook the Beermen heading to the half.
Santos, Fajardo and Cabagnot went to work as soon as the second half started. They scored nine straight points to open the quarter as San Miguel pulled back into the game. The game was close until the early-goings of the final period where the Beermen held a slim lead. Santos got a 6-0 run started midway through the final quarter with a big three-pointer. NLEX tried to get the lead back but Santos hit another booming three-pointer to give San Miguel a double-digit lead. That was enough to hold on to the win.
The game was marred by several incidents in the fourth quarter. Von Pessumal was called for a flagrant foul when he shoved his former teammate Kiefer Ravena as he was trying to get into the paint for a rebound. Chris Ross and Alex Mallari then got into a shoving match as Mallari ran into Ross during a fast break. Both players were called for a technical foul. Michael Miranda was ejected from the game when he kicked Ross while he was down after a play.
Things boiled over when the game was nearly done as Ross and Coach Yeng Guiao got into a shouting match. Guiao had words for Ross during a break in play and Ross didn’t hesitate to approach the coach to say some words of his own. Both Ross and Guiao had to be separated and Ross was given another techical foul and thrown out of the game.
