San Miguel moves to one win away from the Finals

San Miguel Beermen 105 – Alaska Aces 94 (San Miguel leads 2-0)

The San Miguel Beermen once again prove that no lead is safe against them. They came back from a 16-point hole against the Alaska Aces to take a 2-0 lead in their Semifinals series. They’re now one win away from sweeping Alaska and making it back to the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

With Vic Manuel struggling early in the game, Alaska relied on their back court to build their double-digit lead. From a slim one-point lead in the first quarter, the Aces went on a 12-2 run to build an 11-point lead. Jeron Teng and Simon Enciso teamed up to power that push. Teng continued his torrid pace as he scored on a drive to open the second period and nailed a three-pointer to push the lead even further. Abel Galliguez nailed a trey to give the Aces their biggest lead of the game. Alaska took a 11-point heading into halftime.

Unfortunately, the Aces couldn’t maintain their pace. Chris Ross went on a personal 9-0 blitz early in the third period as he nailed three straight treys. That pulled San Miguel back into the game. After that run, it was June Mar Fajardo and Renaldo Balkman that took over. The two dominated in the paint to keep Alaska from pulling away once again. Cabagnot nailed a three-pointer to give the Beermen the lead back as San Miguel took over the lead.

The Aces were still within one point midway through the fourth period. But Balkman, Cabagnot and Fajardo teamed up to go on a 9-0 run to give the Beermen a double-digit lead. Arwind Santos and Cabagnot each nailed a three-pointer in the closing minutes to fend of any Alaska runs. Balkman led the Beermen with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Fajardo was downright dominant with 21 points and 18 boards. Ross had 16 points and four treys.
