A week ago, Jericho Cruz reportedly asked for a trade. His wish was to be reunited with former coach Yeng Guiao, now the coach of the NLEX Road Warriors. This prompted Rain or Shine management to be open to talks about trading their young wing for the right deal. Cruz, a known scorer, had several interested parties, including NLEX, Kia, Phoenix and TNT.
It looks like Cruz will finally get his wish to leave Rain or Shine. But he’s not going to NLEX. He’s reportedly being traded to the TNT KaTropa in exchange for rookie Sidney Onwubere and a first round pick. Waylon Galvez of the Manila Bulletin reported that the Elasto Painters and the KaTropa have submitted the trade papers to the Commissioner’s Office for approval.

Before this season, Cruz was averaging 10.4 points on 45% shooting, playing nearly 23 minutes per game. With the emergence of players like Ed Daquioag, Chris Tiu and Rey Nambatac, Cruz has fallen out of the rotation this season. He’s only played three games this season, playing a total of 41 minutes. He’s only scoring 2 points on 10% shooting.
The KaTropa needed a boost in their offense and they could definitely use a player like Cruz. He can move into the rotation next to Jayson Castro, RR Pogoy and RR Garcia to provide them with an additional scoring option in the wings. All it took cost the KaTropa was a rookie that they weren’t using much this season so far. TNT needs that boost since they’re clinging on to the eight spot with a 4-5 record.
Onwubere is joining a Rain or Shine team where he can learn from a player of a similar mold. He can play behind Gabe Norwood and expand his game beyond just the scoring and outside shooting he’s know for. The Elasto Painters have righted the ship with a 5-3 record.
