Kobe Paras commits to the UP Fighting Maroons

Nowhere to go but UP indeed for the Fighting Maroons.

A few months after securing Ricci Rivero for Season 82, UP has gotten another talented player to join their team. Coach Bo Perasol announced today via Ikot.ph that Kobe Paras will be the newest Fighting Maroon.

The initial reports state that Paras will be able to play later this year when UAAP Season 81 kicks off. But Normie Riego of ABS-CBN clarified that Paras will have to undergo one year residency and will be joining Rivero in a stacked UP line-up for Season 82.

Paras said that he chose UP not only because of their improving basketball program but also because it is the top university in the country.

“The University of the Philippines is the most respected educational institution in the country. The attraction of UP is not just its basketball program, which just gets better each year, but the world-class education it is known for.”

Coach Bo Perasol is happy to have Paras but he isn’t looking at him as the lone savior of the team.

“That being said, talent is talent, and we are fortunate to have a talent like Kobe on board. Winning, as experience has shown us, takes more than talent. We have to get everyone on the same page and to play the right way, and that is what we will be working on in the months to come.”

Paras moved to the US back in 2015 and played for Cathedral High School in California. He was a highly-touted recruit in his home state and committed to playing for UCLA in 2016. Unfortunately, academic concerns forced him to leave the Bruins. He found a new home with the Creighton Bluejays where he played for one year. In 2017, Paras transferred to California State University Northridge (CSUN) to continue his US NCAA career. Earlier this year, Paras left CSUN to “go pro”.

Since then he’s been named to the Gilas 23 for 23 pool with Rivero and has been practicing and competing with the team.

Kobe joins his brother Andre and dad Benjie as the newest Fighting Maroon of the Family.
