Mindanao PBA All-Stars 144 – Gilas Pilipinas 130
The Mindanao PBA All-Stars approached this game as if they were the national team going up against a bigger, stronger international opponent. They knew they didn’t have the size, so their game plan against Gilas Pilipinas was to use their speed and shooting. They did exactly that in the fourth quarter to win the game.
In front of their home crowd in Davao Del Sur, the Mindanao squad put on a shooting clinic. Their guards were fast an ferocious as Baser Amer and Mark Barroca were relentless in attacking the Gilas defense. Both point guards played off each other well, alternating between scoring and playmaking to lead the Mindanao team.
Amer’s scoring explosion in the fourth quarter was the difference in the game. Leading by a slim margin, heading into the final period, the Mindanao All-Stars used a searing 18-0 run to effectively end the game. Because of his performance in the final period, Amer was awarded All-Star MVP honors.
The Meralco point guard led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Barroca wasn’t far behind with 20 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Everyone got into the scoring act as eight players scored in double figures for the Mindanao All-Stars. As a team they combined for 57% shooting.
June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar dominated the paint for Gilas. Fajardo finished with 34 points and 19 rebounds while Aguilar scored 25.
This is the first time the PBA All-Star selections have beaten the National Team since reverting to this All-Star format last year. The 2017 Luzon and Visayas All-Stars were beaten by Gilas Pilipinas while the Mindanao All-Stars were only able to tie the National team.
The Mindanao All-Star squad also celebrates another victory earlier in the evening. They also beat Gilas in the pregame dance-off.
