Lyceum, San Beda stay undefeated, EAC gets first win of the season

SBU Red Lions 88 – MU Cardinals 70

The San Beda Red Lions remained spotless as they dominated the Mapua Cardinals in the second half of their game. The Red Lions are now at 4-0 to stay in second place in the standings. Javee Mocon had a breakout game with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Donald Tankoua had 17 points while Robert Bolick has 11 points and eight assists.

The Red Lions zoomed out to an early lead as they powered their way to 30 points in the first quarter. It was a balanced effort from the entire team as they got points from key players off the bench to post a 13-point lead. The Cardinals battled back in the second period. Cedric Pelayo scored 12 points to lead Mapua back into the game, down by only four points heading into the half.

San Beda was done playing around as soon as the second half started. Mocon unloaded 12 points in the third period alone to help the Red Lions pull away. San Beda built a 10-point lead heading into the final period. The Red Lions continued to dominate the paint as Tankoua poured in eight points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

EAC Generals 79 – SSC-R Golden Stags 77

The EAC Generals needed extra time but they finally nabbed their first win of the season. They upset the San Sebastian Golden Stags with two comeback runs in the final period and OT. James Maguliano had a breakout performance with 30 points and 17 rebounds. Hamadou Laminou and Jerome Garcia added 13 points each.

Midway through the fourth period, the Stags took a nine-point lead off a Ken Villapando layup. Just when it looked like another loss for the Generals, they turned the game around. Renz Gonzales and Laminou teamed up to get out on the break and pull EAC back into the game. Gonzales was fouled with 36 seconds left in regulation and tied the game with a freebie to send the game into OT.

San Sebastian once again jumped out into a lead in the extra period. They led by four points with less than three minutes left in the game. Maguliano scored on a put back and Jethro Mendoza hit a floater to tie the game. EAC took the lead on free throws by Garcia with eight seconds left. The Stags muffed their final chances as the Generals escaped with the win.

LPU Pirates 91 – UPHSD Altas 77

The Lyceum Pirates put on another dominating display as they nabbed their sixth straight win over the Perpetual Altas. This is the 24th straight elimination round win for Lyceum dating back to their 18-0 run last season. The Pirates pulled away for good in the second quarter as when they erected a double-digit lead which they protected the rest of the way.

The Altas were able to get to within three points early in the fourth quarter. But that was the last time they would challenge Lyceum. Jaycee Marcelino and CJ Perez took over in the fourth quarter as Lyceum went on a 23-12 blast the rest of the way. Marcelino scored 12 points in the final period to lead the Pirates.

Perez was dominant in the win with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Marcelino finished with 20 points on 73% shooting. Spencer Pretta and Raymar Caduyac combined for 17 points and five treys.
