Lyceum completes a historic sweep, San Sebastian stays in the Final Four race

The Lyceum Pirates complete a historic sweep of the NCAA Season 93 elimination round. With their 18th straight win, Lyceum goes straight to the Finals and will have to wait for two sets of step-ladder knockout games to determine who they’ll face there.

Their game against the San Beda Red Lions was an instant classic as both teams dragged each other into double overtime, trading haymaker after haymaker. Donald Tankuoa led San Beda to a two point lead in the dying seconds of regulation. But Mike Nzeusseu scored on a Raymar Caduyac drive to level the game at 85. Both teams couldn’t convert in the dying seconds so the game went to its first extra period. In overtime, Tankuoa once again dominated inside. He helped San Beda build a five-point lead heading into the final minute. But Lyceum’s pressure defense forced several turnovers to help them get back to within one point.


With 11 seconds left in the game, needing a basket for the win, Lyceum turned to their star. Cjay Perez used a Nzeusseu screen and drove into the lane. He was met by a Red Lion defender as he jumped to take his shot so Perez floated a bit longer and then launched a a jumper over which splashed in to give Lyceum a one-point lead with five seconds left. San Beda had no more timeouts so Robert Bolick rushed to get downcourt. He was sandwiched between two Lyceum defenders and was fouled. Bolick trooped to the line where he split his charities, enough to tie the game and send it to a second overtime.

Bolick tried to make up for his costly missed free throw in the second extra period. He drove into the lane and scored on a tough floater over Nzeusseu to give his team a 105-103 lead. But Lyceum took the lead back on free throws by Perez and Nsseuzeu. With 10 seconds left in the game, and his team down by one, Bolick attacked the Lyceum defense. His floater hit front iron and Lyceum was able to gain possession. Perez split his free throws but stole the ball back on the rebound to close out the game and complete the sweep.

SSC-R Golden Stags 80 – UPHSD Altas 60

With a shot at the playoffs on the line, the San Sebsatian Stags didn’t mess around. They didn’t allow the Perpetual Altas to get a whiff of the upset as they built a double-digit lead early and never looked back.

RK Ilagan and Michael Calisaan formed a potent inside-outside combo for San Sebastian early in the game. The two combined for 14 points in the first quarter as the Stags jumped out to a 20-10 lead. Perpetual cut into that lead heading into the second quarter but it wouldn’t matter. Ilagan and Calisaan teamed up again to combined for 14 of their team’s 18 points to restore the double-digit spread. From there, the rest of the team pitched in to blow out the Altas in the second half.

Ilagan finished with 23 points on five treys while Calisaan had a 21-point, 10-rebounds double-double. The San Sebastian offense was humming as they hit 42% of their shots and assisted on 23 of their 35 made baskets. The Stags attacked the glass on the offensive end. They out-rebounded the Altas 19-4 on the offensive end. This resulted in 16 second chance points and additional chances at the basket.
