No more Oblation?
That’s what ABS-CBN Sports is reporting, as the broadcaster of the UAAP was forwarded a new logo for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons for use in the upcoming season.
U.P. representative and UAAP Season 78 secretary-treasurer, Dean Ronnie Dizer advised ABS-CBN Sports that they will no longer allow the use of the “Oblation” logo anymore for the UAAP coverage. The Oblation is the monument and main symbol of the University of the Philippines system.
U.P. forwarded an entirely new and colorful “Fighting Maroons” logo for UAAP Season 78.
The new “Fighting Maroons” logo has a local warrior holding a shield with Baybayin (the ancient pre-colonial Philippine writing system) characters spelling out “U.P.” on one hand and another hand holding a spear.
While it leans a bit more towards the UE Red Warriors spectrum, it certainly puts the “fight” in “Fighting Maroons.”
Hopefully the change inspires the actual players though. The Fighting Maroons have finished in last place or tied for the cellar spot in the past six seasons, going back to UAAP Season 72 in 2009.
In 2010, UP actually ran a contest to change the moniker of their team, with the winning entry supposed to be revealed during the Cheerdance Contest of UAAP Season 73. However, no mention of the promotion was made during said event, and the contest seemingly abandoned.
