Semifinals 1st game: DLSU 84 – FEU 71
Semifinals 2nd game: San Beda 81 – JRU 77
The stage for the 2015 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Finals is set.
The DLSU Green Archers defeated the FEU Tamaraws handily with a score of 84-71 to get a chance to repeat as champions of the FilOil preseason tournament. The Archers stormed out of the gate early as they were extremely efficient on both ends of the floor. The Tams were caught off guard while the Archers knocked down shot after shot gaining a 26-12 advantage in the first quarter.
FEU made the game interesting though as they fought their way back in the second half. Mike Tolomia suddenly remembered he’s one of the top point guards of the UAAP and went to work. Tolomia only had 11 points, but he had eight assists for his teammates. One of the Tamaraws that Tolomia looked for all throughout the game was Roger Pogoy. Pogoy tallied 22 points while knocking down four triples. If there’s one player that FEU fans can get excited about in next year’s UAAP season, it’s Pogoy. Pogoy looked slimmer, in better shape, and he played toe-to-toe with La Salle’s Jeron Teng.
The Archers on the other hand, had more weapons in their arsenal. Jeron Teng led his team with 19 points and five rebounds, though he was only 5-for-10 from the free throw line while also having four turnovers. Thomas Torres helped La Salle’s cause with 18 points.
Joining DLSU in the Finals is a familiar foe in the FilOil tournament, the San Beda Red Lions. The game had a wild finish but Coach Jamike Jarin and his boys were able to pull away against the pesky JRU Bombers, 81-77.
JRU was down huge in the final frame before willing themselves back into it. They made an amazing 26-1 run and led by as much as four points in the final minutes. JRU could have easily been the ones facing DLSU, but Art dela Cruz would have none of that. The Red Lions leaned on their championship experience to avoid an embarrassing meltdown as they defended the Heavy Bombers aggressively in the final moments. Dela Cruz finished with 22 points and eight assists to lead his team.
JRU ended the game on a 31-19 fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to defeat the NCAA champs. Paolo Pontejos had 22 points while teammate Tey Teodoro had 20, but the latter missed his last two three-point attempts and failed to complete JRU’s comeback.
In the Juniors Division, La Salle’s high school counterpart, the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers are likewise heading to the Finals after disposing the NU Bullpups, 78-66. UAAP Season 77 Mythical Five member Aljun Melecio was named the best player of the contest as he posted a game-high 30 points. Melecio controlled Zobel’s offense as he kept attacking the Bullpups’ defense relentlessly.
Facing Zobel is Mapua/Malayan High School, after they dispatched reigning UAAP Juniors champions Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 89-80. Rom Junsay led his team with 25 points while shooting an efficient 10-for-20 from the field. The Eaglets meanwhile, played without their star guard Jolo Mendoza.
The finals for both the Seniors and Juniors Division is set for Sunday, June 14 at the FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan. DLSZ will face Mapua at 1PM while DLSU and San Beda will face off at 5PM.
The battle for third place between Ateneo and NU will be at 11AM while FEU will battle against JRU at 3PM.
