Ginebra stays alive after a clutch Game 3 win

Barangay Ginebra 107 – Magnolia Hotshots 103 (Magnolia leads 2-1)

It was a game of runs between both teams. In the end Justin Brownlee’s career-high scoring explosion and LA Tenorio’s clutch play kept Barangay Ginebra’s season alive. They beat the Magnolia Hotshots in Game 3 to extend the series.

Midway through the game, it seemed as if Ginebra was done. After a tight first quarter, the Hotshots opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to slowly pull away. PJ Simon and Paul Lee buried shots from outside as Romeo Travis and Jio Jalalon scored inside during that run.

Mark Barroca then came alive. He scored seven points in a 9-0 blast that gave Magnolia a 13-point lead midway through the second period. He closed out the quarter a three-pointer and a bucket from midrange to put Magnolia up by 18. They settled for a 16-point lead heading into the half.

Ginebra refused to quit. Led by Justin Brownlee, they chipped away at the Magnolia lead in the third period. Brownlee scored seven of the first 10 points of Ginebra in the second half to set the tone for the entire team. The rest of the team joined on on Brownlee’s third quarter onslaught to get back in the game. A pair of Brownlee free throws momentarily gave Ginebra the lead near the end of the third quarter before Barroca’s three-pointer gave Magnolia the lead back.

That didn’t matter though as Ginebra had wrestled momentum away from Magnolia. Brownlee continued to relentlessly attack the paint, getting to the line several times in the final period. They built an 11-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and were looking to pull away for good.

But Magnolia went on one final run to try and steal the game. Travis and Barroca sparked a 14-1 run that was capped by a Lee three-pointer and back-to-back Travis buckets inside, giving Magnolia a two-point lead with 53 seconds left in the game.

Ginebra answered that run by executing on the both ends. Scottie Thompson scored on a put back to tie the game. Ginebra then trapped Lee forcing the guard to throw the ball away. In the next play, they put LA Tenorio and Brownlee in a pick and roll situation. Tenorio got free from the Brownlee pick and nailed a clutch floater to give Ginebra the lead. Lee missed a his potential game-winning attempt and Tenorio nailed two free throws to ice the game.

Brownlee tied his career-high with 46 points on top of 19 rebounds, five assists, two steals and three blocks. Tenorio had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Thompson added 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists as well.
