5. Barangay Ginebra 104 – 4. Meralco Bolts 90 (Ginebra advances to the Semifinals)
Justin Brownlee was on fire in the first half as he led Barangay Ginebra to sweep the Meralco Bolts. Brownlee dropped 24 of his 36 points in the first half of the game. He also had six rebounds, nine assists and three steals.
Meralco got the jump on Ginebra early in the game. They went on a 16-6 run to build an 11-point lead midway through the first period. Brownlee teamed up with Greg Slaughter to pull Ginebra back into the game as they only trailed by four points heading into the second period. Brownlee scored 10 straight points in the second quarter to keep the Barangay within striking distance. Sol Mercado and LA Tenorio drained back-to-back treys to cut the lead to just one point. Brownlee added another trey to help Ginebra pull ahead.
Ginebra came out of the halftime break one fire as Brownlee and Joe Devance traded baskets to help their team pull ahead by double-digits. The Ginebra locals took over what Brownlee started as Tenorio, Jeff Chan and Kevin Ferrer kept the team ahead by double-digits. A free throw by Japeth Aguilar gave the team their biggest lead at 18 points. Baser Amer and Chris Newsome teamed up to cut the deficit down to just six points as the Bolts went on a last gasp run. But Ginebra refused to fold. They closed the game on a 17-9 run. Tenorio sparked the run with a trey while Brownlee and Slaughter put the exclamation points with highlight dunks to end the game.
Slaughter added a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tenorio and Aguilar combined for 21 points and both scored in double-digits.
6. San Miguel Beermen 106 – 3. TNT KaTropa 102 (San Miguel advances to the Semifinals)
The San Miguel Beermen were able to fend off the TNT KaTropa to advance to the semifinals. All five San Miguel starters finished in double figures led by Renaldo Balkman’s 25 points and Alex Cabagnot’s 21. June Mar Fajardo added 19 points and 12 rebounds while Chris ross had 11 points and 10 assists.
Coming off a rough Game 1 loss, TNT came out firing in Game 2. Joshua Smith once again dominated in the paint while his forwards Troy Rosario and Anthony Semerad dropped bombs from the outside. Terrence Romeo’s trey pushed the lead to as high as 12 points near the end of the first period. Mar Fajardo, Balkman and Kelly Nabong led the Beermen on the combeack trail in the second period. Balkman’s back-to-back baskets inside pushed San Miguel ahead.
The second and third quarters became a game of runs as TNT tried to rebuild their lead but the Beermen refused to let them pull away. The Beermen finally took control of the game as they led by three points heading into the final period. Cabagnot and Fajardo scored six straight points to open the fourth quarter as the Beermen jumped out to a seven-point lead. TNT continued to hit from the outside as Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro and Semerad all nailed a three-pointer in a run to tie the game at 98. Romeo had a chance to take the lead for TNT late in the game but missed his three-pointer badly. Balkman, Fajardo and Cabagnot sealed the win with clutch free throws as TNT couldn’t capitalize on the offensive end.
