Playing without AJ Edu, Gilas Youth refused to get blown out by Argentina in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup in Greece. Unfortunately, their comeback effort fell short as they lost their second game 72-77.
Dav Ildefonso bounced back from a horrible shooting night in the first game to notch 22 points on 53.3% shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Philippines in the loss. Kai Sotto scored 17 points and grabbed blocked six shots. Gerry Abadiano and Carl Tamayo pitched in nine and eight points respectively.
Argentina took advantage of the smaller Filipino front line by scoring in the paint early and often in the first half. They were able to jump out to a 14-point lead midway through the second period.
The Philippines refused to throw in the towel. Sotto and Ildefonso led the charge to get back in the game. They were able to limit Argentina to just two points in the final three minutes of the first half, cutting the deficit down to just seven points heading to the break.
Gilas fell behind by 15 points midway through the fourth quarter but once again showed heart to try and get back in the game. Ildefonso scored 11 straight points as Gilas inched their way back in the final six minutes of the game. They got as close as four points off a three-pointer by Gerry Abadiano with 33 seconds left.
Unfortunately, they were forced to foul to extend the game. The Argentinians proved steady from the foul line, drilling four freebies to keep Gilas at bay.
