The Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 teams grabbed the first pair of gold medals for Philippine basketball in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. The Men’s team dominated the competition, sweeping their way to the top. The Women’s team dropped a game in Day 2 but still finished at the highest spot in the podium.
The Men’s Team with CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa, Chris Newsome and Jason Perkins won all four of their assignments in the day, finishing the tournament with an 8-0 slate. They opened the day with big wins over Malaysia (21-13) and Cambodia (21-6). Perkins dominated the paint in both games to lead Gilas.
Gilas closed out the tournament by eliminating Thailand in the Semifinals, 21-13 and beating Indonesia in the Gold Medal match, 21-9. Their final game was a showcase of dominance as Perez had a highlight slam, while Tautuaa closed out the tournament with a big two-pointer.
The Women’s composed of Jack Animam, Clare Castro, Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos team faced challenges along the way but still found a way to come out on top. They opened the day with a strong 21-14 showing over Vietnam. Gilas couldn’t get a sweep as they dropped a 20-22 OT result in their final Preliminary game against Thailand.
In their final two games, Gilas made sure not to make the same mistake. They went on a big run in the Semifinals against Vietnam to win, 21-12. Tied at 12, Pontejos sparked a 9-0 run with back-to-back triples to close the game. In the gole medal match, Gilas jumped out to a 10-point lead before, holding off Thailand to win, 17-13. They avenge their earlier loss by taking the gold over Thailand.
