The Gilas Youth team absorbed their third loss in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup. They suffered their worst loss of the tournament at the hands of Russia, 64-92. Gilas Youth finishes with a 0-3 record in the Group Stage.
Kai Sotto and Dave Ildefonso led the way with 14 points each. Sotto also had seven rebounds and six blocks while Ildefonso tallied six rebounds and five assists. Carl Tamayo added 12 points and five rebounds to the Philippines’ total.
Gilas started off on the wrong foot as they allowed the Russians to get the jump on them. After Sotto opened the game with a jumper, Russia went on a 7-0 run to take the lead. From there, they slowly built a double-digit advantage the rest of the way as they outscored Gilas 28-15 in the opening period.
Things didn’t get any better for the Philippines as the game progressed. Russia was relentless in attacking the hoop and finding openings in the Gilas defense. They closed the second quarter with seven straight points turning a manageable 12-point lead into a 19-point halftime deficit.
The Russians never looked back. They took their biggest lead of the game in the fourth quarter at 30 points and cruised to the win.
The Russian offense was on point. They didn’t shoot well from beyond the arc, hitting only nine shots for 30%. But they hit nearly 60% of their shots from the two-point range. Russia also had 23 assists in the game.
In contrast Gilas struggled on both ends of the ball. Their defense couldn’t hold Russia down and their offense never got going. The team shot only 35% from the field and missed all but two of their 19 attempts from beyond the arc.
Even with a 0-3 record, Gilas still moves on to the Bracket Stage. They’re going up against the top team of Group D, Serbia. A win moves Gilas forward in the bracket, a loss will send them packing.
