It wasn’t as big a blow out as in their previous games but the Gilas Pilipinas Men still ended up with a big win in the Semifinals against Indonesia. They once again used a strong run to get the 97-70 win and advance to the Gold Medal Round.
It was a balanced effort for Gilas with Christian Standhardinger leading the way. He dropped 14 points to set the tone in the game. He was followed by Matthew Wright who put up an all-around line of 13 points, four rebounds and eight assists. Vic Manuel had 12 points while June Mar Fajardo and Stanley Pringle added nine points each. Laurent Kokodeputra had 20 points for Indonesia.
Indonesia, coached by former National Team head coach Rajko Toroman gave Gilas a run for their money as they were within striking distance midway through the game. Back-to-back triples from the Indonesians cut the Gilas lead from a 12-point double-digit lead, down to just six.
That’s when Ross and Wright came alive for Gilas in the third. Ross drilled back-to-back threes to answer the Indonesia run. That sparked a 35-8 blast that turned the game into a blowout. Ross scored nine of his 11 in the third period alone. He was joined by Wright in the shooting display as the two powered a 39-point third quarter barrage. Gilas took a 78-45 lead after the third period and never looked back.
Gilas is now assured of at least a silver medal in the 5×5 Basketball Tournament. But they’re looking for their 13th straight gold medal in this category when they face Thailand in their final game.
