Gilas 3×3 Women salvage a win in the Group Stage to stay alive in the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup

After suffering their first loss of the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup, against the third-seeded Japanese team, the Gilas 3×3 Women’s team bounced back with a big win over Sri Lanka, seeded sixth in the tournament. With that win, the team stays alive waiting for the final result of their group.

After three straight wins in the Qualifying Draw to make it to the Main Draw, Gilas suffered a huge setback against the more favored Japanese squad. They lost, 20-8 as Japan jumped out to a big lead and never looked back. Japan took a 10-2 lead and paced Gilas all the way.

Gilas had no answer for Mio Shinozaki who torched them for eight points. Janine Pontejos could only manage three points to lead the team in scoring.

Playing back-to-back games to start the Group stage, the Gilas girls quickly bounced back. Afril Bernardino made sure that the team returned to their dominant form. She shredded the Sri Lankan defense early in the second game to put Gilas up 8-0.

From there, Gilas was able to pound the ball inside to Clare Castro to increase the lead to nine points. Bernardino put the finishing touches in the game with three straight points to get the 21-6 win. The high-scoring guard finished with a game-high nine points. Castro added six points in the win.

Gilas currently sit in second place in Pool C with a 1-1 record. They await the result of the game between Japan and Sri Lanka to see who will advance to the next round. If Japan beats Sri Lanka, Gilas will move on to the Quarterfinals where they will face the top team of Pool A.
