Gilas 12 mix youth and experience for first FIBA Asia Cup Qualifier game

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced the final 12 for the first FIBA Asia Cup Qualifying game. Gilas will be sporting a new look as the familiar names from previous campaigns are either injured or have pulled out for various reasons.

Gilas will now be relying on a mix of fresh talent and some familiar names as they face a regional rival in Indonesia.

Leading the way will be proven Gilas staples in Team Captain Kiefer Ravena, Troy Rosario, Cjay Perez, and RR Pogoy. They’re joined by Poy Erram and Abu Tratter, both of whom were part of the Gilas teams that competed in the World Cup Qualifiers back in 2017 and 2018. Representing the Philippines for the first time will be Justin Chua, a late addition to the pool.

Those pro players will be flanked by young stars. Isaac Go and Matt Nieto, recently drafted in the 2019 PBA Draft as a special Gilas Pool assignees make it to the team. Rounding out the roster are Thirdy Ravena, Juan Gomez De Liaño and Dwight Ramos. Ravena just finished his stint with Ateneo, while De Liaño is skipping the next season. Both are focused on helping the National Team this year. Ramos, will be playing his first year with Ateneo this season.

The team will be coached by TNT active consultant Mark Dickel.

Gilas was supposed to open the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers with a home game against Thailand today. But due to the Corona Virus outbreak, FIBA decided to postpone that game to a later date. That’s why Gilas will be traveling to Indonesia to open their Asia Cup campaign.
