June Mar Fajardo suffers fractured tibia, out for Philippine Cup

The San Miguel Beermen suffered a huge loss after five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo injured his leg in practice.

The Beermen have released a statement confirming earlier reports of the injury.

Based on the statement, the injury happed during practice last February 3. He immediately underwent successful surgery and will be going through rehab.

The Beermen confirmed that Fajardo won’t be playing in the Philippine Cup and any upcoming international competitions. There’s no word yet if he will return anytime this season.

Fajardo is the biggest reason for San Miguel’s dominance in the past five years, especially in the Philippine Cup. He’s been the rock of the Beermen on both ends of the floor, pouring in monster numbers to lead his team to wins and several championships. The Beermen were gunning for a sixth straight Philippine Cup title in the upcoming season.

Fajardo averaged impressive numbers once again last season. He put up 18.8 points, 13.6 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest, leading the league in statistical points. Fajardo is once again the front-runner for last season’s MVP award. Should he win, he would once again set a record for most number of MVP awards at six.

With Fajardo missing an extended period of time, the Beermen would be lacking in size. They only have Mo Tautuaa and Billy Mamaril as the main big men to lean on while Fajardo recovers. This puts their Philippine Cup championship streak in peril as the rest of the contenders have made several moves to improve their respective rosters.
