Mighty Sports Philippines moved to a share of first place in the 2016 William Jones Cup in Taiwan, after an impressive 86-65 win over Korea on Monday.
Former NLEX Road Warriors import Al Thornton led all scorers with 24 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, where the Philippines poured in 27 markers. Zach Graham added 13 points, while Dewarick Spencer contributed 12, as Mighty Sports picked up its second straight win in as many days.
Spencer scored six of Mighty Sports’ first eight points as the team went on a 12-3 run to open the game. Korea managed to fight back behind its outside shooting and take an 18-17 lead momentarily, but Thornton countered with five unanswered, to give the Philippines a 22-18 lead after the first quarter.
The Philippines then outscored Korea 23-13 in the second period, leading by as much as 41-24 after a Spencer jumper, to go up 45-31 entering the halftime break.
Korea kept trying to pull closer in the second half, cutting the Philippines lead down to just eight, 65-57 in the fourth period, but Mighty Sports responded with a 10-0 run, which included eight from Thornton, to put the game out of reach.
Philippines joined Iran on top of the team standings with 2-0 records. The team will face the United States tomorrow.
