The 2019 FIBA World Cup Trophy is making its way around the world. This iconic piece of basketball history is making stops at select countries that have qualified for this year’s World Cup. One of the legs of the tour was held here in Manila where the World Cup Trophy was warmly received by Filipino basketball fans.
The first group of people who saw the trophy up close were members of the media. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) hosted a press conference to talk about the Trophy Tour and the preparations for the upcoming World Cup. SBP President Al Panlilio, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial, Gilas Head Coach Yeng Guioa and Andray Blatche were there to welcome the trophy.
The trophy then made its way to Gateway Mall where fans were able to see the trophy and take photos with it. During the mall event, Gilas Pilipinas also held a meet-and-greet attended by Gilas Pool members Blatche, Kiefer Ravena and CJ Perez.
After a busy first two days, the FIBA World Cup Trophy was able to have some “down time.” It visited popular tourist sites in Manila such as Manila Bay, Luneta and San Sebastian Church.
The final stop of the trophy in Manila was the historic big dome. During halftime of the PBA game that day, the FIBA World Cup Trophy was showcased to the public and sent off by PBA and SBP officials as well as members of the Gilas Pool.
