FIBA Asia Cup Gilas pool showcases young stars

The PBA along with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) announced earlier today the 24-man Gilas Pool for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers window on February.

Leading the pool are the seven names that the SBP have already announced in the past few months. Isaac Go, Matt Nieto, Mike Nieto, Rey Suerte and Allyn Bulanadi, the top five picks in the 2019 PBA Draft that were allocated for the National Team by their respective teams are at the top of the list. They’re followed by Thirdy Ravena and Jaydee Tungcab, who were included in the pool at the end of last year.

Several players that have played in previous iterations of Gilas were also included in the pool. Veterans of several campaigns such as Poy Erram, RR Pogoy, Japeth Aguilar, Troy Rosario, Christian Standhardinger and Matthew Wright are the big names currently in the PBA. Young guys in the league like Kiefer Ravena, Ray Parks, CJ Perez and Mac Belo also made the pool.

A surprise inclusion from the PBA is Marc Pingris. The 38-year old forward last played for the National Team in 2016 during the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila.

The rest of the pool is rounded out by UAAP superstars in Juan Gomez De Liaño, Javi Gomez De Liaño, Dave Ildefonso, Kobe Paras and Justine Baltazar. Also making it to the pool is forward Dwight Ramos who is set to make his debut with the Ateneo Blue Eagles next season.
