San Miguel eliminates NLEX with a win in Pangasinan

San Miguel Beermen 125 – NLEX Road Warriors 114

The San Miguel Beermen got big performances from all their starters to eliminate the NLEX Road Warriors from playoff contention in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. San Miguel rises up to 5-4 while NLEX absorbs their eighth loss of the conference.

The Road Warriors came into the game hobbled and desperate for a win. They lost another key member of the back court as Larry Fonacier couldn’t suit up with a rib injury. On the brink of elimination, NLEX relied heavily on their import Arnett Moultrie for production. Moultrie powered the Road Warriors to an eight-point lead in the first period. Asi Taulava came up with much needed points in the first period as he scored four three-pointers in the first quarter.

NLEX just couldn’t hold the Beermen down. Marcio Lassiter got it going in the second quarter to not only retake the lead but blow the game wide open. The Road Warriors held on to a one-point lead late in the second period when San Miguel went on a 9-0 run. Lassiter drained back-to-back three-pointers to spark the run. NLEX was able to cut the lead down to single digits but Lassiter drained another trey before halftime to rebuild the double-digit lead.

With momentum on their side, San Miguel wouldn’t let the lead go. NLEX got as close as six points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth but never really threatened. The Beermen just had too much firepower to let go of the lead fully. June Mar Fajardo led the team with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Marcio Lassiter was scoreless in the opening and closing periods but still finished with 26 points and six treys.
