DLSU center Ben Mbala ruled ineligible for upcoming UAAP season

The De La Salle University Green Archers’ problem at the center position worsened on Monday following news that transferee Ben Mbala was ruled ineligible for the upcoming season, which begins in September.

The news was first reported by Go Archers, and was later confirmed by ABS-CBN News’ Camille Naredo.

Mbala, who came over from the South Western University Cobras, was caught playing in a “ligang labas” while establishing his residency last year. He lost a vote to allow him to be fielded this season, 4-2, with UE, Adamson, UE and NU as “nay votes.” UP and Ateneo both opted to vote to allow him to play, while FEU abstained.

As a result, Mbala must sit out one more year before playing.

The Green Archers already lost Norbert Torres to graduation, while Arnold Van Opstal opted to skip his final playing year to deal with his plantar fasciitis.

The team will now have to rely on holdover Abu Tratter, and new recruits Daryl Pascual, Larry Muyang and Jboy Gob. The team may also opt to play small with Jason Perkins or Prince Rivero at center.
