The core of the team will be made up of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Maverick Ahanmisi, Raymond Almazan, Beau Belga, Gabe Norwood, Chris Tiu and James Yap all made the team. Joining them are Poy Erram from the Blackwater Elite, Paul Lee from the Magnolia Hotshots, Stanley Pringle of the NorthPort Batang Pier, Christian Standhardinger from the Magnolia Beermen and Asi Taulava of the NLEX Road Warriors. The final player on the team is Jordan Clarkson from the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Coach Guiao said that he made sure Clarkson had a slot that’s why he named him to the final 12. But right now the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is still working on getting the NBA player to actually play in the Asian Games. According to Guiao, keeping Clarkson on the roster was “worth the risk.” If Clarkson does indeed play in the Asian Games, his talent will be a big help for the Philippine Team.
The final cuts from the team were Don Trollano from the TNT KaTropa and Gilas Cadets Ricci Rivero and Kobe Paras.
The team is made up of several players who have represented the country in international competition before. Almazan, Belga, Norwood, Tiu, Lee, Standhardinger and Taulava have all been part of previous Gilas teams. Guiao, Yap and Taulava were part of the Philippine Team back in 2009 for the FIBA Asia Championship.
