Brownlee powers Ginebra to a much-needed win

Barangay Ginebra 93 – NLEX Road Warriors 85

Both the Barangay Ginebra and the NLEX Road Warriors desperately needed a win in Legaspi City. In the end, it was Ginebra that snapped their three-game losing streak to strengthen their Playoff bid.

The Road Warriors were clearly missing firepower from their back court. Without Kiefer Ravena and Kevin Alas, NLEX had to rely on Arnett Moultrie in the first half to keep them within striking distance. Ginebra was only able to take a seven-point lead in the first half. The Road Warriors repeatedly cut down the deficit to prevent Ginebra from blowing the game wide open. Moultrie scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 54 midway through the third period.

Ginebra started to execute better on the offensive end. They focused on attacking the paint and that opened space for their shooters outside. Greg Slaughter and Justin Brownlee got the run started with buckets inside. That led to back-to-back three-pointers from Kevin Ferrer. Joe Devance added another three-pointer as Ginebra went on a 17-5 run to take a double-digit lead before the third period ended.

Brownlee led the Barangay to a 10-0 run to open the fourth period. He scored four straight points to cap the run, highlighted by a strong dunk inside. Ginebra’s lead ballooned to 19 points as they stayed in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.

Brownlee had monster numbers with 23 points, 22 rebounds and seven assists. Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar locked up the paint with a combined 25 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Ginebra’s record goes up to 2-5 while NLEX falls to 2-6.
