Beermen spoil TNT’s awarding day to even the series

The TNT KaTropa may have won the individual awards of the day, but the San Miguel Beermen were the ones that took home a crucial win. The Beermen took down the KaTropa in Game 4, 106-101 to tie the Finals series at 2-2.

Chris McCullough had another strong game with 27 points and 22 rebounds but it was the locals that were the big difference from their Game 3 loss. June Mar Fajardo broke out of a slump to score 22 points on 71% shooting. Alex Cabagnot was clutch in the end, finishing with 25 points and five assists. Jones led TNT with 32 points and 16 rebounds.

San Miguel came out strong, taking a sizeable lead after the first quarter. But TNT came back with a run of their own in the second period to retake the lead heading into the half.

Down by one point midway through the third period, the Beermen, led by Fajardo went on a 18-4 tear to end the third quarter, leading to a double-digit lead. Fajardo scored 10 straight points during that run, dominating the TNT bigs in the paint. Cabagnot and Von Pessumal found their range with back-to-back bombs to close the third period and take a 13-point lead.

The KaTropa starters teamed up to claw their way back into the game. They chipped away at the San Miguel lead, getting to within two off six straight points by Jones. But Fajardo scored a big basket in the paint off a McCullough pass and Chris Ross came up with a game-saving steal in the next two plays. Cabagnot cooly sank four straight free throws to extend San Miguel’s lead and TNT’s comeback bid ran out of time.
