Beermen shrug off Fuel Masters for a 3-1 advantage

The San Miguel Beermen are now one win away from making it back to the Philippine Cup Finals. They trounced the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 114-91. The Beermen are now up 3-1 in their best-of-seven series.

Terrence Romeo came off the bench to pump in all of his 20 points in the second half. Alex Cabagnot added 18 points while Arwind Santos scored 16. Matt Ganuelas-Rosser started in place of the injured Marcio Lassiter to contribute eight points, six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Calvin Abueva led Phoenix with 19 points and 15 boards.

After their Game 3 loss, the Beermen came out more determined in Game 4. The San Miguel bench came in late in the first period to spark a run that put San Miguel up by seven. Alex Cabagnot and Arwind Santos continued their hot start in the second quarter as the Beermen built an 11-point lead heading into the half.

The dams broke in the third quarter when Romeo put on a personal shooting show. He only needed a little more than four minutes to score 15 points. Romeo started his run with a pull-up three-pointer over Calvin Abueva from the top of the key. He then popped out for a three-pointer for his second basket of the game a few minutes later. He drilled home a fast break three-pointer in the following possession. Romeo provided the finishing flurry with two more threes in the final minute of the third to put San Miguel up by 26.

The game was practically over at that point. The Beermen bench came in for the final push. They sustained San Miguel’s attack, pushing the lead up as high as 30 points midway through the fourth, cruising to the win. San Miguel has a chance to close the series in Game 5 and advance to the Finals for the fifth straight year.
