San Miguel Beermen 102 – Barangay Ginebra 90, San Miguel takes a 1-0 series lead
The San Miguel Beermen unleashed a torrent of outside shooting to dominate Barangay Ginebra and take Game of their best-of-seven semifinals series.
The Beermen’s first three shots of the game were all from beyond the arc. That set the tone for the rest of the game. Barangay Ginebra was employing a swarming defense on June Mar Fajardo in the hopes of slowing the MVP down. But that meant leaving someone open in the perimeter. That’s exactly what happened in the first possession of the game. Fajardo attracted three defenders, leaving Marcio Lassiter wide open for the triple. Arwind Santos added two more three-pointers off nice passes from Alex Cabagnot.
San Miguel’s bench also got onto the board as Von Pessumal, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and Gabby Espinas all provided points in the second period. They helped the Beermen build a double-digit lead multiple times in the second period before they settled for a nine-point lead heading into halftime. The dam broke in the third quarter when the fresher, better-rested Beermen got out and ran the floor. Chris Ross pushed the pace and got several fast break buckets to go. Lassiter hit a three-pointer to increase the lead to 19 points, their biggest of the game.
Ginebra tried to get some momentum going in the final period. They were able to cut the lead down to just 12 points with a little over four minutes left in the game. Enough time to make one last run. But San Miguel quickly shut the door on them when Lassiter and Pessumal drained back-to-back dagger triples. The Beermen cruised to the easy win. San Miguel shot 50% from the field and nailed 16 three-pointers as a team. Santos led the way with 23 points. Pessumal came off the bench to add 18. Lassiter and Alex Cabagnot combined for 32 points.
