San Beda takes solo lead with third straight win

The San Beda Red Lions break a tie for the top spot with their third straight win. They dominated the EAC Generals, 89-72 on their home turf to get their latest win. The Generals lose their second straight game after opening the season with a win.

James Kwekuteye continues to lead the Red Lions. He led all scorers in the game with 21 points on 50% shooting. Evan Nelle manned the point well with 15 points and seven assists. Calvin Oftana had 14 points while Donald Tankoua added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Marwin Taiwan led EAC with 20.

Facing a raucous EAC crowd, the Red Lions got off to a slow start. They fell into an early double-digit lead as their offense looked stalled. The Generals jumped out to a 12-2 run to open the game. Coach Boyet Fernandez was forced to call an early timeout to get his team to refocus.

After the timeout, San Beda looked ready to play. Evan Nelle distributed the ball well as seven players got on board. They went on a 22-4 counter run to not only get back, but take full control of the game. The Red Lions took a 24-16 lead heading to the second period.

The balanced scoring trend continued all the way to the end. San Beda steadily pulled away from EAC in the game. Behind Kwekuteye’s seven points in the second, they took a 16-point lead. Oftana’s nine points in the third led them to a 71-45 advantage. That was enough to hold off the Generals until the end.
