Alaska Aces 110 – TNT KaTropa 100
The Alaska Aces got excellent performances from Vic Manuel and Antonio Campbell in their big win against the league-leading TNT KaTropa. Manuel continued his stellar play this conference as he led the way with 29 points on 66% shooting. He also had 12 rebounds to add to his scoring total. Antonio Campbell scored 23 points and grabbed 20 boards as he controlled the paint for Alaska.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Aces, controlling the game from the opening buzzer. TNT never got a chance to taste the lead throughout the ball game. From a slim three-point lead midway in the first period, Alaska went on a 7-0 run capped by baskets from Manuel and Campbell to build their first double-digit lead of the game. Campbell continued his offensive onslaught in the second quarter as Alaska slowly took control. The locals joined in on the scoring act as Calvin Abueva, Jvee Casio and Jeron Teng all got on board to build a 16-point lead before halftime.
TNT tried to get back in the game early in the second half when they went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to just 10 points. But Manuel powered his way into the paint to score six points in a 9-2 run near the end of the third quarter. Alaska took a 17-point lead once again and never looked back. Alaska focused on scoring inside as they accounted for 48 points in the paint. They scored on an efficient 47% clip from the field and an even cleaner 50% from two point areas. TNT was limited to just 38% shooting and 33% from beyond the arc.
Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 123 – San Miguel Beermen 119
The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters came back from a double-digit first half deficit take over the game in overtime and overcome the San Miguel Beermen. The Elasto Painters bounce back from their first loss of the conference with a big win over the defending champions.
San Miguel’s locals progressively took over the game in the first half to take a commanding lead. From a slim four-point lead, the Beermen closed the second quarter with a 13-4 run to take a 14-point lead into halftime. June Mar Fajardo opened the third quarter with two strong moves inside to increase the lead to its biggest at 17 points. The Elasto Painter locals fired back in the third quarter to get back in the game. Raymond Almazan, Chris Tiu and Ed Daquioag all chipped in to cut the huge deficit down to just six points heading into the final period. That set up the wild finish of this game.
Gabe Norwood nailed a massive three-pointer to give the Elasto Painters a two-point lead midway through the fourth period. Maverick Ahanmisi and Jay Washington scored back-to-back baskets to give Rain or Shine a four-point lead in the final three minutes of regulation. Arwind Santos came up big for San Miguel. He scored five straight points to give the Beermen the lead back. Tiu scored on three free throws to give Rain or Shine a two-point lead with 18 seconds left in the final period. Alex Cabagnot once again proved his nickname to be apt as he scored on a crucial drive to tie the game with 11 seconds left and send it to overtime.
Unfortunately for San Miguel, they went to OT without their import who was ejected and without their MVP, Fajardo who fouled out. That opened up the inside of Almazan to do work. After Norwood hit a three-pointer to open the extra period, Almazan put the game away with three straight free throws as the Beermen couldn’t control him inside. Rain or Shine scored six straight points to put the game away in OT.
