2018 Jones Cup: Ateneo opens the Jones Cup with a blowout win

Ateneo Blue Eagles 87 – Chinese-Taipei White 64

The Ateneo Blue Eagles put the entire Jones Cup field on notice. They sent a statement in their first game by blowing out the Chinese-Taipei White team on their home court. Thirdy Ravena led the way with an all-around performance on both ends of the floor. He scored 17 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals and a block. Angelo Kouame had a big double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds.

The Blue Eagles relied on their patient offense and stingy defense to take down the home team. Ravena had back-to-back highlight plays in the first period to help Ateneo build an early seven-point lead. He scored on an incredible Euro-Step, and-one layup to extend Ateneo’s lead to five. He followed it up with a two-handed, put back slam to extend the lead.

The Blue Eagles caught fire in the second quarter as they nailed three straight triples to build a double-digit lead. Jolo Mendoza nailed two treys in that run as Ateneo ran out to a 13-point lead. It was Kouame’s turn in the third quarter. The big man went to work in the paint scoring six points and assisting on one bucket as Ateneo went on a 12-6 run to increase the lead to 18 points.

Ravena, Isaac Go and Will Navarro opened the fourth quarter with baskets inside as Ateneo pulled away for good. Their lead ballooned to as high as 24 points early in the fourth quarter.
